A Local's Guide to Getting to the Hamptons Without the Stress

Everyone who summers on the East End has felt it: the Friday-afternoon dread of Route 27, the Jitney that fills up, the two-hour trip that somehow takes four. Getting to the Hamptons does not have to be the worst part of the weekend. Here is how locals actually do it.

Timing is everything — and it is not subtle

The single biggest factor is when you leave. Friday afternoons eastbound and Sunday afternoons westbound are the notorious crawls, when the LIE and Sunrise Highway (Route 27) back up for miles. Leaving Thursday night, or very early Friday, can save well over an hour. A midweek trip is a different world entirely. If your schedule has any flexibility, use it here more than anywhere else.

Know your route, and know your alternates

The standard path is the LIE (I-495) east to Sunrise Highway, Route 27, straight through the villages to Southampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton, with the long final stretch out to Montauk. When 27 seizes up, the back roads through the farmland — for a driver who knows them — can be faster than sitting in the line. This is where local knowledge beats a navigation app that sends everyone down the same jammed highway.

Why the car beats the alternatives

The Jitney is comfortable but inflexible, with a fixed schedule and limited luggage. Driving yourself means arriving frazzled and losing your car to a weekend of beach parking. A private Hamptons car service splits the difference: you leave when you want, someone else fights Route 27, and you arrive rested with all your luggage. Make the trip part of the weekend
